This object is achieved according to the invention in that the hydraulic pressure chambers can be locked via a drain valve each, so that the piston can assume a central position in which it delimits two hydraulic pressure chambers. This solution provides that a mechanical stop is deliberately avoided for the middle position. At least for the intermediate positions, this gives up the advantage that a certain connecting rod length is determined by a mechanical and thus clearly defined stop. On the other hand, you gain the advantage that you can better adapt the connecting rod length and thus the compression ratio of the engine to the respective operating conditions. Check valves 14, 15 are located in the oil lines 12 and 13, which allow the inflow of oil into the pressure chambers 10 and 11, but block the outflow from these chambers. Parallel to the check valves 14 and 15, the oil lines 12 and 13 branch off to a 3/3-way valve, by means of which either the discharge of a pressure chamber 10 or 11 or both pressure chambers 10 and 11 can be blocked. In the position of the 3/3-way valve 16 shown in the drawing, the outlet of the upper pressure chamber 11 is open, while the outlet of the lower pressure chamber 10 is blocked. In this position of the 3/3-way valve, the inertial forces of the engine ensure that the piston 5 moves upwards in the direction of the stop formed by the cylinder cover 8. The gas pressure forces of the engine, which would actually ensure that the piston moves downward, are prevented by the blocked pressure chamber 10. The pressure chamber 10 continues to fill with engine oil when the piston moves upwards, but the oil cannot flow away. The length-adjustable connecting rod 1 thus occupies its longest length in this position of the 3/3-way valve.
